Complan VS Horlicks dirty game - India

Sometime back my friend asked me to just check Horlicks UK website and it was really shocking to see Horlicks is not a drink to grow tall. Instead its a drink to sleep well.

If you dont believe me then check it yourself here.

If you ask them then they may tell you they both are really different products. Well sometimes we feel they are right cos they know how to tackle the market. They may be even prepared with readymade answers. Forget it.

But in UK there is a team or group which restricts the product biasing. Like for instance: If the Horlicks shows ad about growing taller then they have to prove it. And its really not so easy. But in india its very simple as there is nobody to ask questions.

Recently i read in the hindu newspaper that some court ordered such products should not misguide the consumers and such advertisements should not be telecasted.

And did they change after such order ?? Well its a big NO.

When there are people to believe and buy these products, these companies really dont bother any court rules too.

Yoga - Awakening of Chakra - the powerful energy centres in the body

Yoga - Awakening of Chakra - the powerful energy centres in the body

Chakra

Chakras are powerful energy centres in the body. Although invisible, these seven wheels balance the body and the spirit.

Chakra means ‘wheel' in Sanskrit. There are seven chakras — the wheels of energy — in the astral body. Six of them are found along the spine and the seventh is located at the crown of the head.

Chakras are powerful energy centres in the body. Although they are invisible to the eye, these wheels of spiritual energy balance the body and the spirit. The chakras store dynamic energy known to the yogis in India as Kundalini, to the Chinese as Chi and to the Japanese as Ki.

Each chakra spins in a clockwise direction and is depicted by a colour. These whirling vortices of energy glow with the light of the spectrum, from red at the base, to violet at the crown. Each of the seven chakras has a unique characteristic and a vital role to play in our physical body as well as in our consciousness.

The three lower chakras correlate to basic primary needs, those of survival, procreation and will. The four higher chakras correlate to the psychological make-up and represent higher spiritual qualities such as love, compassion and understanding.

Yoga and the awakening of chakras

The practice of yoga is directed at awakening the divine energy in every human being. Asanas play an important role in awakening this Kundalini energy.

This energy, when awakened, has a powerful vitalising and regenerating effect.

It can be channelled for self-development, healing the body and mind and to get in tune with the soul.

Yoga can illuminate life

Just as a goldsmith heats gold in the fire to burn its impurities, the practise of asanas removes physical and mental impurities from the system and cleanses the body.

It can remove negative energy, stress, tension and other obstacles from the body and mind.

Earth Day - 22 April - Whats your contribution ?

Earth Day - 22 April - Whats your contribution ?

Each and everyone of us must contribute a positive action towards earth day. And whats your contribution ?

General awareness is really necessary on Recycling E-Waste.

Whats that e-waste recycling ?
Discarded computers, printers, copiers, mobiles… are we building e-mountains? How do we handle toxic tech trash?

* It's energy efficient to rebuild old computers.

* Recycling just a million cell phones would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

* Flat panel computer monitors/notebooks contain small amounts of mercury.

* Cathode ray tubes in older TVs/computers have lead.

Excellent topic on earth's day.

Check out.

Citizens at Risk tells a chilling story about e-waste. Made by Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, Chintan Environment and Action Group and Arjun Bhagat/IMAK, the short film details what happens when computers from “US, Malaysia” come to the bylanes of Delhi to “die”. In the middle of mountains of e-scrap, barefoot children, standing on a street of lead-coated broken glass, perform the last rites. Covered in toxic dust, they smash screens with hammers, while women tear apart electronic components, boil and wash them in acid with bare hands, for money-earning metals. Acid pools are everywhere. The commentator talks of toxic hydrogen chloride fumes.

An elegant word, but there's nothing refined about e-waste. We generate it when we casually throw out computers, monitors, TVs, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, keyboards, mouses, mobiles, laptops, projectors, cameras, audio equipment, toys, games and household appliances — e-waste is anything with a main plug or battery.

A billion dollar industry

Breaking computers is a billion dollar industry. The Printed Circuit Board has minute amounts of gold, silver, copper, palladium, aluminium and platinum. On its flip-side, e-waste contains toxic chemicals zinc, lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PVC and arsenic compounds. When the waste is burned, heavy metals are released. With water and acids, they seep into groundwater. The complex, informal system of recycling is peopled by rag pickers who know no techniques, have no protective gear.

Information Tip of the day:

General Protocol:
Cough and cold:

1. Please close your mouth while you sneeze:

I have encountered a lot of times that some people dont close their mouth while sneezing. If you sneeze then it actually spreads the infection to others. And even many literate dont follow this basic protocol.

2. If you are sick then you should not come to work. If you still want to work then please bring tissues when you are suffering from cold. Please dont spit in the public place as again this could spread the infection to others.

What a shame. If you even dont know these general protocols then I really want to ask you what is the use of Education?

Are you pregnant? You live in a hot place ?

Hot climate produces baby girls

People who live in the tropics have more baby girls compared with those living in other parts of the world, work reveals.

It may be down to the hotter weather or the longer days, says US researcher Dr Kristen Navara in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

She says this climate may change miscarriage rates and sperm quality.

Or there may be some evolutionary advantage to having more girls than boys if you live by the equator.

Experts already know that the birth rates of boys and girls vary across the globe.

While some of this can be explained by society - in countries like China baby boys are favoured and many unborn girls are electively aborted - there are natural processes at work.

Research suggests the female foetus is less fragile than the male foetus, which is more prone to the effects of the environment on pregnant women.

At times of extreme environmental stress, including war, the birth rate of girls outstrips that of boys.

MUST Sleep well if you are pregnant

If you are pregnant then you really need to sleep else it can affect your baby.

Babies born to women who suffer from anxiety or depression prior to pregnancy are more likely to wake up at nights when they are six and 12 months old.

Results indicate that anxiety or depression was a strong predictor of infant night waking, independent of the effects of postnatal depression, bedroom sharing and other confounding factors.

Significant psychological distress prior to conception was associated with a 23 per cent increased risk of infant night wakings at six months and a 22-per cent increased risk at 12 months.

Frequent, disruptive night wakings in the latter period of the first year are clinically relevant because they predict sleep problems at three years of age, which in turn are associated with behavioural problems, according to a release of SLEEP, a journal.

During early childhood development, poor sleep quality also may affect learning abilities. Infant night wakings also disrupt a mother's sleep, which predicts maternal mood, stress and fatigue.

The study involved 874 women between 20 and 34 years of age in Southampton. Before becoming pregnant the women completed the general health questionnaire, a 12-question screening instrument that detects depression and anxiety disorders.

Twenty-nine per cent of the women were classified as having significant psychological distress.

When their baby was six and 12 months of age, the women reported how often their child had awakened on average between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. each night during the last two weeks.

These findings were published in the Wednesday issue of SLEEP.

Mouth germs increase risk of heart attack

Better brush twice a day to avoid Heart attacks ?

People with more germs in their mouths are more prone to a heart attack,
says a new American study.

Though many studies have hinted at a link between bacteria that cause gum disease and heart attack, there was not conclusive proof of this. But the new study clearly links oral hygiene to cardio-vascular health.

Researchers now believe that bacteria in the mouth cause general inflammation, leading to blood clots and then a heart attack.

In their study, researchers at the University at Buffalo picked up 386 men and women (35 to 69 years of age) who had suffered a heart attack.

They compared the heart attack victims to 840 people free of heart trouble by collecting samples of dental plaque, where germs adhere, from 12 sites in the gums of all participants.

All the samples were analyzed for the six common types of periodontal bacteria and the total number of bacteria.

The researchers found that heart patients had much more of each type of bacteria than the healthy volunteers in their mouths.

Though the researchers linked two species of bacteria - Tannerella Forsynthesis and Preventella Intermedia - to a higher risk of heart attack, the total number of germs or bacteria played was more important to heart health.

"The message here is that even though some specific periodontal pathogens (germs) have been found to be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, the total bacterial pathogenic burden is more important than the type of bacteria," said study leader Oelisoa Andriankaja.

"In other words, the total number of 'bugs' is more important than one single organism," she said.

The study has been presented at the on-going International Association of Dental Research meeting in Miami.

brain injury ? Go take a blood test

Blood test for critical brain injuries closer to reality

A blood test that can help predict the seriousness of head injuries is a step closer to reality, according to two recent studies.

Tragic head injuries underscore the need for a simpler, faster, accurate screening tool, said Jeffrey Bazarian, associate professor of emergency medicine and neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Centre (URMC), and co-author on both studies.

The S-100B blood test recently cleared a significant hurdle when a panel of national experts, including Dr. Bazarian, agreed that it could be a useful tool for patients with brain injuries, allowing them to avoid a CT scan.

Previous studies have shown the S-100B biomarker to increase rapidly after an injury. If measured within four hours of the injury, it accurately predicts which head injury patients will have a traumatic abnormality such as hemorrhage or skull fracture on a head CT scan.

It takes about 20 minutes to get results and could spare many patients unnecessary radiation exposure. But in U.S., the screening tool is still the CT scan, which shows bleeding in the brain but does not detect more subtle injury to the brain's neurons, which can result in lasting neurological defects.

There are more than one million emergency visits annually for traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the U.S.. the majority comprising mild injuries, primarily the result of falls and motor vehicle crashes.

The challenge for doctors is to identify which of these patients has an acute, traumatic intracranial injury, something that is not always evident, and which patients can be observed and sent home.

Physicians at six emergency departments in upstate New York, including the one at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, this year will continue to study the accuracy of the test among 1,500 patients.

Scientists plan to use the data to apply for Food and Drug Administration approval, said an URMC release.

You love PISTACHIOS ?

Before eating another pistachio which you already bought from USA, read the following:

Officials at a New York plant tied to a nationwide pistachio recall caused by salmonella fears said Thursday that they had stopped shipping pistachios and addressed health and safety problems found inside the plant.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating Setton International Foods Inc. of Commack, N.Y., as part of the salmonella scare involving its sister company, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc.

The San Joaquin Valley plant earlier this week recalled 2 million pounds of nuts over fears of possible salmonella contamination.

Last month, New York agricultural authorities discovered nearly two dozen dead cockroaches, rodent droppings and one live cockroach on an ingredient rolling rack inside the Commack plant, which failed its state health inspection.

Lee Cohen, the production manager for Setton International Foods, said that those conditions weren't related to the recall and that the plant was now spotless.

Inspectors went back Wednesday to swab the plant and take food samples to be tested for salmonella and other pathogens, said Jessica Chittenden, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets. The test results are pending.

Avoid sleep after Lunch - Easy ways

Struggling to keep your eyes open after lunch? Most of us find it really hard to feel bright and energetic at work, post lunch. Good news: you can wipe away the afternoon blues by eating right and ensure that your body gets sustained energy release from food.

Why the energy slump?

What you've eaten to kick-start your day, the lunch you have had, the amount of water you have sipped all through the morning, and if you have slept well the night before-all of this can determine whether you experience a mid-afternoon slump or not.

'What you put inside will certainly fuel the type and level of energy that you get out,' says Jennifer Salib Huber, a naturopathic doctor, registered dietician and owner of Pillars of Health in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. According to Huber, those who opt for a doughnut or a cake are making a poor choice of energy production, because these foods are simple carbohydrates that are broken down rapidly by the body to give a quick but short boost of energy. 'However, your blood sugar will then have a resulting drop that's fairly quick too,' she adds.

This is not unusual in the middle of the afternoon; one, because people are tiring out after the morning burst of work and their breakfast sugar and coffee highs are coming to an end around that time or lunch means that we are robbing the body of essential nutrients and putting it at a disadvantage to be able to manage blood sugar levels efficiently. Ensure that you eat small portions, but often. Avoid starting your day with a caffeine boost. Opt for herbal teas and fresh fruit/vegetable juices with your breakfast instead.

Balance your meals:
Always include a wholegrain/complex source of carbohydrates with lean protein in every meal, as they break down slowly to give the body sustained energy release. Wholegrains are rich in fibre (they are known to slow down energy release) and in B vitamins- essential for energy production. Ideal wholegrain choices are brown rice, whole-wheat chapattis, jowar/bajra chapattis and oats. To get more proteins you should go for fish (oily fish is even better), chicken, tofu, beans and pulses. Note Protein-rich foods at lunchtime can help block the production of sleep inducing serotonin or increase the levels of two other brain chemicals-dopamine and norepinephrine-which make us feel more alert and increase our ability to concentrate.

Avoid quick pick me-ups:
Sugar-laden, simple-carb foods and caffeine drinks are 'uppers' that are a no-no. Simple carbs such as white rice, white bread, white pasta, fried snacks, are best avoided. A sugar-laden bar of chocolate, coke and coffee (which have caffeine) will also rapidly boost blood sugar levels to give you a quick energy boost but your blood sugar levels will drop just as rapidly, taking you back to square one (read: slump).

Keep up with your water intake:
Being even slightly dehydrated can affect your concentration levels and make you feel tired. Tea and coffee are diuretics (that make you urinate frequently) and definitely can't substitute plain water. Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. Enjoy herbal and fruit teas as they are naturally caffeine-free.

Exercise for energy:
Go for a short, brisk walk before lunch. It will help improve your digestion and invigorate you, as exercise boosts endorphins (feel-good chemicals) in the body. Ensure that you build a 30-minute exercise regime into your lifestyle, at least 3 times a week.

Get enough sleep:
Make sure that you get at least 7-8 hours sleep every day, as sleep deprivation can have a devastating effect on your body and energy levels.

Take care :)
